Painting Myself into a Corner

Galleri MGM is pleased to present Jan Christensen’s second exhibition with the gallery. The show includes works ranging from wall painting to video and photography.

The wall painting entitled "More Titles for Which I Don't Know What to Make" follows an earlier work from last year, with a similar title, and consists of titles and notes scanned from the artist's sketches. The superimposed excerpts create a partly abstract composition. As the title of the installation indicates, these are ideas for titles and themes for which the artist yet has no idea what to produce.

The DVD-video installation "No Input" simply reproduces the generic error message of a malfunctioning video projector and a blue screen, resulting in an empty work of art, devoid of anything but denial, failure and collapse.

The final installation has given its name to the show, "Painting Myself into a Corner". The artist will quite literally paint himself into a corner of the exhibition space. The ironic gesture refers to the paradox of signature style as the ultimate end of artistic practice. In addition to the installation, there will be photographic works available documenting previous installations of the same performance.

Jan Christensen was born 1977 in Copenhagen and studied in Oslo at the National College of Art and Design, 1997-2000. He has had one-person exhibitions in Berlin, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Oslo, and he has received a number of grants and awards over the course of only a few years. Since last year he has receded at residencies in Stockholm (IASPIS/NIFCA) and Nice (Villa Arson) and this winter he will go to Seoul, South Korea, for a residency with the National Art Centre/the Museum of Contemporary Art, and subsequently to Dublin for aresidency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art next year.
