PRESS RELEASE

Quarantine Series
ON THE WALL: Jan Christensen
June 7 - July 20, 2003

Today you receive some information about Jan Christensen, the artist of the inaugural exhibition of Quarantine Series.

Quarantine Series decided to invite Jan Christensen (born in 1977 in Copenhagen, based in Berlin) after seeing one of his works at the Oslo Kunsthall in May 2002: a wallpainting made as background for a series of lectures on exhibition models and (physical and mental) spaces for contemporary art. Christensen¹s wallpainting consisted of portraits of the speakers combined with architectural fragments of the institutions they represented. The intricate layering of the images not only
served as a perfect backdrop for the topic of the lectures, but also suggested an ideal model for exhibition spaces in itself: a deconstructed, boundless, gravity-free web of planes, able to move in any and all directions.

Although reflecting on the structure of exhibition spaces, the work of Jan Christensen is not sealed inside the realms of the art institute. It refers to the languages of our time and the life around us, communicating the aesthetics of our media-based culture. His murals often show a graphically lively, colourful kind of painting, incorporating advanced computer graphics. No surprise that Jan
Christensen is an admiror of the paintings of Michel Majerus, whose work he included in an exhibition he curated himself in February this year at the gallery c/o - Atle Gerhardsen in Berlin. But also other favorites like Liam Gillick, Sol Lewitt, and Rirkrit Tiravanija were included in this small and delicate group show.

For Quarantine Series Jan Christensen will make a new wallpainting, consisting of superimposed layers of graphic images. Christensen will take the plans and 3D models of our exhibition space as the starting point for a panorama of floating architecture, mobile structures, and multiple perspectives. A perfect blueprint for the programme of Quarantine Series...

The artist will be working on the wall from June 2nd to June 6th. If you would like
to meet him, please contact us at quarantine@loods6.nl

We hope to welcome you in our space.
